Personal income declined in 2009 in most of the nation’s metropolitan statistical areas, however Colorado Springs saw a slight increase, thanks to the military.

Colorado MSAs generally fared poorly, according to estimates released today by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Personal income declined by 6.7 percent in Grand Junction, 5.1 percent in Boulder, and 4.2 percent in Denver. Colorado Springs and Pueblo managed small increases of 0.6 percent and 1.3 percent, respectively.

Although personal income grew in 134 MSAs, in most cases this growth represented an increase in transfer receipts, unemployment insurance benefits, for example. Only in 57 MSAs did the net earnings of workers increase in 2009.

Colorado Springs has long relied on military earnings growth to boost income growth. Seven of the ten MSAs where earnings growth was strongest have a high concentration of military-related government spending, including Jacksonville and Fayetteville, N.C.; Manhattan, Kansas; Elizabethtown, Ky.; Lawton, Okla.; Clarksville,Tenn.; and Killeen, Texas.

That seems to be a simple statement, but I believe it is important to understand this, because we are so used to the fact of money that it’s easy to forget that it is really a mental construct that we created. Paper and coins are only symbols of that construct the same way that words are a symbol of thought.

There was a time that money was not. For example, the U.S. Constitution, adopted in 1789, gave the U.S. Congress the legal power to create money. The U.S. Coinage act of 1792 adopted the Dollar as the currency unit and subdivided it into 100 cents. The first U.S. Mint started operations in Philadelphia in 1794. Money is simply a mechanism that governments have created in order to facilitate the exchange of value.

On one hand there was blond and blue-eyed Martin from Germany and on the other there was my brown-skinned nephew of Trinidadian heritage. Two total strangers, from totally different backgrounds and cultures, connecting through fun and outdoor activities. It doesn’t get any better than that….

After Martin had left, we continued our walk on Lake Simcoe and enjoyed our time in the warm sunshine like all the other people on the frozen lake until the sun slipped down beneath the horizon.

We took in the activities and watched float planes land and take off, we watched the dog walkers, the ATV riders, even mountain bikers on the lake, and glanced at the ice-fishing huts in the distance on the other side of the bay. One young boy was playing catch with his father, and with real Canuck determination, was dressed in shorts. He figured +8 degrees Celsius was enough to break out the summer garb.

The Ministry of Health finally confirmed that infants with possible thyroid problems should not take Soya, and that it would be preferable if all Soy-based infant formulas were used only under medical supervision.

The Australian College of Paediatricians also warned that the use of Soya-based formulas might produce side effects.

Meanwhile, a variety of press statements were issued following a number of research projects on Soy:

(a) A study by the National Institute of Aging in Hawaii warned people in middle age to stay off tofu because of a risk of contracting Alzheimer?s disease. The Hawaiian researchers claim that phytoestrogens do not act like natural estrogens, and they are not necessarily good for humans. MOHD Afiq Ikhwan, after a podium finish on Saturday, failed to keep his momentum going and only collected points in one of the two Formula BMW Pacific Series races at Guangdong International Circuit yesterday.

In the day’s first race, a skirmish involving teammates Ryan Ritchie and Amirrul Khirudin and Afiq at Turn 1, ended the Malaysian’s race. In the second race, Afiq bounced back from his earlier disappointment to finish sixth.

Oscar Tunjo, however, shone for the Malaysian team when he finished second in both races. Pasin Lathouras was in the points in both races after placing fifth and seventh.

With the finishing order of Saturday’s second race determining the grid for yesterday’s second race, amendments to the race results affected the order.

Tunjo, Jesse Dixon and Lathouras were each penalised 10 seconds for overtaking during yellow flags. The three therefore started from ninth, 10th and 11th positions respectively.

Despite the disadvantage, Tunjo, who is the youngest driver in the competition, showed his determination to fly past his opponents to claim his second podium finish of the day.

“This was a really hard race. I started from not such a good position so I just kept driving and concentrated on overtaking.

“The last two laps I was really close to Richard, but with other drivers behind me I decided to close the line and keep second place,” said Tunjo, who signed with the Malaysian team late last year.

LAW firm Ward Hadaway has scored a double success in the health sector after being chosen to supply legal services to two major NHS buying consortia, one covering the North East and the other covering the North West. The firm, which has offices in Newcastle and Leeds, will supply full legal services to 11 NHS trusts in the North East after winning a place on the legal panel for the NHS Procurement North East (Prone) scheme.

And the firm will provide advice on healthcare law, property, IT, telecommunications, e-commerce and mental health law after winning a place on Prone’s equivalent in the North West, the North West Collaborative Commercial Agency (NWCCA).

The double success – awarded following two hotly contested tender processes – means that Ward Hadaway will now provide expert legal advice to NHS trusts right across the North.

Earlier this year, the firm was appointed to the legal panel for the Yorkshire and the Humber NHS Commercial Procurement Collaborative (YHCPC), which helps more than 30 health organisations across Yorkshire and Humberside to buy goods and services.

Jeffrey Keeble, partner and head of healthcare at Ward Hadaway, said: “These latest appointments demonstrate that Ward Hadaway is a major player in the North of England’s healthcare sector.

“The fact that we have been chosen to supply NHS organisations in both the North East and the North West shows the real strength in depth we possess and demonstrates the high quality of advice we are able to provide to the sector.

“Our team strives to provide the very best services for our clients and we look forward to playing our part in improving healthcare services for people across the North of England.”

The Prone appointment will see Ward Hadaway as one of six firms to supply advice across areas including primary care services, employment, contract and commercial issues, PFI/PPP projects, healthcare and mental health care over the next two years.

Prone works with 11 trusts covered by the North East Strategic Health Authority. By pooling their buying power, the trusts are able to secure improved deals on a range of goods and services.

Stakeholder trusts of Prone include the primary care trusts (PCTs) of Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland Teaching PCT.

Also involved are City Hospital Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust, North East Ambulance Service NHS Trust, South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Trust and Northumberland Care Trust.

Stephanie Newburn, project manager for Prone, said: “All appointed suppliers have passed the strict stakeholders selection criteria with high marks and we look forward to working closely with them over the next two years.”

In the North West, the NWCCA covers a total of 58 NHS trusts, primary care trusts and ambulance service trusts across Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire, Cumbria and Lancashire.
